What Is TRIZ?
It is a systematic, logic-based methodology for generating innovative solutions to complex problems
The Core Idea
TRIZ is built on a powerful premise: the vast majority of problems have already been solved somewhere, by someone. Instead of relying on random brainstorming or intuition, TRIZ provides a structured, repeatable approach to problem-solving.
The methodology was developed by the Soviet engineer and inventor Genrich Altshuller and his colleagues, starting in 1946. By analyzing over three million patents, they discovered that:
- Problems and solutions are repeated across industries and sciences.
- Patterns of technical evolution are repeated.
- Innovations often use scientific effects from outside their own field.
These findings suggest that creativity is not a mystical gift, but a skill that can be learned and applied systematically.
Key Concepts and Tools
Technical Contradiction: Improving one parameter (e.g., making a car stronger) worsens another (e.g., making it heavier)
Physical Contradiction: A single parameter must have two conflicting states (e.g., a system must be both “large” and “small”).
To resolve contradictions, Altshuller identified 40 universal inventive principles. These provide a structured way to think about solutions. Examples include “segmentation,” “taking out,” “local quality,” and “asymmetry”.
This tool helps you identify which of the 40 principles are most likely to resolve a specific technical contradiction. It cross-references the parameter you want to improve (e.g., “strength”) with the one that gets worse (e.g., “weight”) to suggest relevant principles
The concept that the ideal solution is one where the system’s benefits are delivered without any costs or harmful side effects. TRIZ guides you toward this ideal.
TRIZ identifies trends that predict how technical systems evolve over time, allowing you to anticipate future innovations

Define the specific problem: Define the problem and its contradictions as precisely as possible
Generalized the Problem: Translate the specific problem into a generalized problem using TRIZ concepts, such as a technical contradiction, physical contradiction, or contradiction matrix.
Find Generalized Solutions: Use TRIZ tools (like the 40 principles) to find general solutions to the abstract problem
Adapt/Apply the Solution: Apply the general solution to your specific situation
